| Project Description: |
| Scripps Institute of Oceanography is located
in La Jolla, California adjacent to the Pacific Ocean on very
hilly terrain. The bluffs overlooking the ocean are as high
as 600 ft. in some areas. The campus is composed of a number
of buildings arranged on the hill and bluffs overlooking the
ocean. As a result of natural topography, the buildings are
situated on many levels. The elevator is sited and designed
to unite several pedestrian paths on the campus, providing handicap
accessability to several structures, despite the challenging
terrain. Because of the key location, adjacent to La Jolla Shores
Dr., and overlooking a magnificant view of La Jolla Shores,
the structure was designed as a steel framed glass tube, with
a lacy and delicate profile, and minimal steel wire guardrails.
The curved roof reflects the curve of the wave tank structure
nearby. |
