Project Description:
Elliot Field Structural Engineering Field Station for UCSD will have the world's first outdoor earthquake shake table. The shake table will be the largest in existance and will allow researchers to test full scale structures up to six stories high. The shake table and adjacent soil testing pits will offer applications for buildings, bridges and other structures. Researchers will be able to use cranes and heavy equipment to build test subjects on the 40' x 25' table. Initial testing will be horizontal with future upgrades planned to allow tri-axial testing to occur.
The building will house hydraulic actuators, offices, control facilities and a mezzanine for visitor viewing of the testing. A future building bay will contain a hydraulic blast simulator.
Funding for this project is a joint effort between the National Science Foundation, Caltrans and UCSD. The total cost is estimated at $10.9 million.
